SKYPE DUET

An Intercontinental, International Theater Piece

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Performed live simultaneously in New York and Berlin through Skype, one woman tries to relate and connect to the world around her, using a laptop as the mode in which she communicates; a quest for human connection in the modern world.

The entire performance is through a computer; online choreographies of familiar forums tell the woman’s story, it is even used to reach out to the audience- although they are in the same room.  There is also a computer for the audience, if anyone wants to reach back.  A Skype call gives the audience the opportunity to interact directly and personally connect with New York City and it's people- reaching across continents and time zones to bring two cultures, two strangers together for a unique moment of intimacy through distance and technology.  The piece ends in an ecstatic moment of togetherness, bridging the technological divide and bringing into question our re-evaluated notions of what it means to be connected to one another.

Touching, funny, and familiar, this piece examines computer-mediated communication and the human need for connection- the evolution of humanity through technology. Through its inventive use of Internet technology, the piece simultaneously comments on its own theme and explores the artistic and personal applications of this technology, as it is more fully integrated into our communications, relationships, lives. This piece is a striking model of what the new form of internet-based performance has to offer.
